GRACE CASANOVA
Leadership
Asian Student Association
President 2022 - 2023
When reflecting on my most recent leadership experience, I turn to my Presidency for The Asian Student Association (ASA) here at The University of Central Florida. ASA is one of the largest multicultural registered student organizations on UCF’s campus, boasting a member group of over 250 students. As President, I supervised and coordinated all internal and external activities of the organization.

The most challenging aspect of my Presidency was finding my leadership style. As a President of a student-run organization at a four-year public university, you must always act knowing that your officer board is also full-time students. It was imperative that I led my meetings as efficiently as possible while still maintaining the integrity and reputation of the well-known organizations. Through this experience, I have learned how to be a robust and effective leader who acts with empathy and compassion at the same time.

It has been rewarding to progress in the organization from a General Board officer to the President on the Executive Board to the present Senior Advisor. Reflecting back on my time as President, I had a goal of collaborating with the greater Orlando community and facilitating outreach projects to perform our mission of uplifting and supporting Asian American voices. I am proud to say that as President, ASA was able to work directly with Malaya Movement, Asia Trent, Gawad Kalinga, and GK Next Gen. Through the work and effort placed by myself and my team, we donated over $3,000 for efforts to relieve poverty in the Philippines and raised over $1,000 in scholarships for UCF students. It was incredibly rewarding to see the hard work and effort all come to fruition and to accomplish my goal of supporting initiatives in our community and across the world.
My experience has enhanced my academic career, professional development, and personal values. In regard to my leadership skills, I feel beyond prepared to take on administrative tasks, event planning, conflict resolution, and effective communication strategies. I feel empowered to lead large member bases, conduct meetings, and be a trailblazer in my community.

This milestone has allowed me to feel confident in my skill set and, most importantly, myself. It has sparked a larger passion for philanthropic and community efforts within me, as well as solidified my passion for leading and executing goals. Furthermore, my time with ASA has taught me so much about my culture and has encouraged me to seek and learn more about my cultural roots. Through this experience, I have decided to conduct my Honors Undergraduate Thesis on cultural orientation and language. My experience in milestone 3 has enhanced all areas of my life, and I am very grateful for my newly acquired skills and motivations.
